Ultimately to explain lawki: babylon is supreme power, and its central temple is dedicated to marduk. Our version not earlier than 1100 bce. By babylon saying that marduk is the king of the gods, they are saying that they are the king of the areas around it. Ee shows that the theogony was a member of a set (cosmological creation myth) Ending with ascension of current #1 god. Probably not directly: probably hesiod adapted structures and materials freely to his own purposes in the context of greek religion. Five generations (like theogony) (*is what we need to know) 2) mummu, lahmu, lahamu, anshar + kishar. 5) marduk* (the lord, bel, enlil, ba"al) Marduk fights war against tiamat & army. Has established order in universe after disorder.
