Document Summary

Social facilitation: arousal enhances the dominant response. Feel greater arousal when you are doing something in front of people. If the task is easy or well-learned, then arousal makes you perform it better. If you are doing something in front of other people that is hard or novel, or something that you haven"t done before, the arousal will make you perform worse and work to your detriment. Maze study, anagrams, sports, cockroaches - watching you versus doing something by yourself good when good and bad when bad, even occurs in animals (cockroaches) There is going to be an optimal point of arousal that is going to maximize your behavior and might be different for different types of tasks. Too little arousal might not motivate you enough to perform well, too high arousal might overwhelm you and threaten your behavior. Social impact theory where arousal comes from. Arousal = f(strength x immediacy x number)
