On the entire region shaped the culture of the region. Byzantine = grew out of the collapse of the roman empire (eastern half). State religion orthodox christianity (does not see the pope as the ultimate supreme authority) have patriarchs of churches. Orthodox christianity could break off into different churches (greek, romanian, bulgarian, etc. : spread of orthodox christianity.
