Document Summary

Rate of fat oxidation is slower than that for cho. Cho oxidation helps maintain dat oxidation rates. Glycolytic production of pyruvate keeps required levels of oxaloacetate to maintain activity if beta oxidation. Less bang for the buck w fat vs cho. Allows for formation of glutamate; remaining carbon-skeletons can be used to form atp. Purpose of krebs cycle to transfer electrons, no phosphorylation , kind of get atp. We store far more pcr than atp- partyl because atp is such a heavy molecule. There might be enough stored atp to sustain maximal efforts 4-8 seconds. We need to have a way to regenerate atp if we want to continue or recover to do more high intensity exercise. Rapid, large accumulation of blood lactate occur during maximal exercise lasting between 60 and 180 seconds. Decreasing intensity to prolong the bout will result in decreases in rate of accumulation and final levels. When lactate oxidation= lactate production, levels remain stable (no accumulation)
