Document Summary
Much of the concern for wt with adolescents focused on fear of damage to :growth plates - recent evidence suggests that epiphyseal plate damage is unlikely. There two major steps to take to guard against injury to kids: proper instruction and proper supervision. This may be one group where trial and error is better than actual max testing to determine safe loads. Focus should always be on form/technique instead of weight. 1-3 sets x 6-15 reps for a variety of exercises; 2-3 nonconsecutive days/week. Wt should be part of a well-rounded exercise program for children that addresses all aspects of fitness. Early involvement appears to increase chances of life-long activity - as long as they are not forced to do it. This group may have more to gain from wt than any other! Strength gains through wt have been see even in those as old as 96 years old.
