Breastmilk most desirable choice: provides immunoglobulins, digestible protein, enhances iron absorption, enzymes for digestion of macronutrients, enhances development of infant gut (decreases risk of nec0, improved neurodevelopment outcomes. Encourage mother to pump and store breast milk in nursery: room temp 4 hours, refrigerator 48 hours, freezer 6 to 12 months. Human milk fortified (1:25 and 1:50 ratios: adding on feeding protocol, first 1:50 - ~80 ml/kg, then 1:25 ~120 ml/kg, contains fat, protein, na+, zn ca and p. Formula fed infants are at increased risk for developing food allergies. High-risk breastfed infants (family history of allergies) may develp allergic reaction to a food their mother has ingested (not to the mother"s milk) Treatment exclude the offending food from mother"s diet.
