Look at the tree diagrams to visualize the roles played. Not really supposed to use meanings, just meant to plug in words for trees: garden path model. Could have classes for verbs transitive vs intransitive. Only syntax is used, so limited amount of info is used prevents impossible structures from being created: constraint satisfaction model. Uses relative frequency to guide parsing for ambidextrous verbs. Do we use semantics to influence the way we parse? (example) the defendant examined . Whenever possible, better to have subjects in highest hierarchy be animate and agents.
