Flat files - data locked tightly to programs that created it. Changes to data structure mean massive cost to revise code. No way to know what the 1"s and 0"s mean apart form the programs written to use them. Dbms - any program can use the data. Changes to data structures require little or no changes to code. Column name - properties of entities we are tracking. Data element - smallest or basic unit of information. One value (attribute) for one property of one entity. Data model - logical relationships among data elements. Data dictionary - compiles all of the metadata about the data elements in the data model. Transactional information - contained within a single business process or unit, supports daily operational task. Analytical information - internal and external supports managerial analysis tasks. Timeliness - aspect of information that depends on the situation. Real-time system - provides real-time information in response to requests.
