Document Summary
Theories and hypotheses: most work on personality starts with a theory a general description of the relationship between objects or events. Those memories distinguish in the spectrum of events or phenomena which they describe. Others, such as the major theories of personality discussed in this book, are very specific. Psychologists used freud"s psychoanalytic theory to describe topics as varied as what causes psychiatric problems, why people resort to religion and how amusing certain jokes are. Personality studies, however, usually deal with much narrower implementations of theories. For example, they may speculate about the reasons why certain people are more driven to succeed than others, or the relationship between the actions of a parent and the self-esteem level of a child. Thinking of the broader theories, such as freud"s, may be useful as sets of more basic c theories that share similar ideas about the essence of human personality: there are at least two attributes of a strong theory.
