BIOL 031 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Arctic Fox, Extracellular Fluid, Internal Control
Document Summary
Homeostasis is not equilibrium ; equilibrium is stasis = dead! Animals regulate their internal environment within relatively narrow limits. Summer = short, brown/white fur (short dissipates heat, brown adds to camouflage) Regulates sweating and other thermoregulatory responses to maintain constant brain temp. Regulating body temperature: a model for homeostasis. Live in cool environments: low maintenance costs. Animals use the chemical energy in food to sustain form and function: all organisms require chemical energy for growth, repair, physiological processes, regulation, and reproduction. Bioenergetics: bioenergetics, the flow of energy through an animal, limits behavior, growth, and reproduction. It determines how much food energy an animal needs: studying bioenergetics tells us much about an animal"s adaptations. Metabolism and cellular respiration convert biochemical energy from food/nutrients into atp and release waste product. This is why you get tired after running: Anaerobic respiration occurs during high-intensity exercises when your body works so hard there is a shortage of oxygen for energy consumption.
