During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, the are in. Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great. Must learn to not always have morals and be good in order to remain in power. If you wish for peace, prepare for war . Willing to fight in war to preserve security. We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Realism that conditions called war; and such a war, as if of every man, against every man and perpetual, and those interest it is our duty to follow number who are not good. Hence a prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires power at that time.
