Houses latent memory traces inherited from people"s ancestral past. Emotionally charged images that have universal meaning. Displayed in culture"s use of symbols in art, literature, and religion. Symbols from different cultures show striking similarities. Archetypal images and ideas show up in dreams. Feminine part of male psyche, masculine part of female psyche. People show consistent patterns of behavior because they have response tendencies. Personality: a collection of response tendencies that are tied to various stimulus situations. Our response tendencies are acquired through operant conditioning. When a response is followed by favorable consequences, it is strengthened. Response tendencies are constantly being strengthened or weakened by new experiences. Therefore, a person"s characteristic pattern is shaped by the models they are exposed to. Ex: parent is assertive - parent gets what he wants - child learns to be assertive.
