Document Summary

Epidermal cells are packed with keratin and linked by strong desmosomes that give it its durability. Bacteria colonize on the surface but are kept in check by the skins dryness. The protective acidic film (ph 4-6) is called the acid mantle. Cutaneous nerve endings called thermoreceptors monitor the body surface temp. Sparse nerve endings for touch and pain, most are found in the dermis. Stem cells: undifferentiated cells that divide and give rise to keratinocytes, found in deepest layer of epidermis, stratum basale. Keratinocytes: majority of epidermal cells, synthesize keratin. Melanocytes: occur in stratum basale, synthesize melanin, aggregation of melanin granules shields dna from uv radiation. Tactile cells few in number receptors for touch: basal layer, associated with an underlying dermal nerve fiber, nerve and cell are called a tactile disc. Dendritic cells: found in stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum. Immune cells: originate in bone marrow and migrate to epidermis, oral cavity, esophagus, and vagina.
