Realism - subjective (everyone has a different view of reality) At first glance: arch made out of marble, sectioned out in different styles. 312 ad edict of milan was created, making christianity legalized. Constantine dreamed of a cross and after defeating his rival maxentius, then became emp and converted to christianity. Arches were made as a symbol of victory. This one was made after defeating constantine"s rival, maxentius. Recycled earlier pieces make up this arch - the section at the top was marble artwork from emp. Aurelius"s time, next, the 2 circles were made during emp hadrian"s reign, last section was made during constantine"s reign. Dacian prisoners are on top (represented in an idealistic way) Horizontal band - done during the time of constantine; shift in style (crowded like a pattern, stubby, puppet looking figures) Constantine is sitting on a rostra and everyone is looking at him - unfortunately the head is missing on the actual piece today.
