Herpes simplex virus 2 (related to chicken pox and cold sores) Many species of bacteria normally live in the vagina. Lactic acid producing bacteria dominate acid helps control growth of other bacteria. Species composition of ora varies: between individuals and ethnic groups. Causes include: decrease normal bacterial ora (antibiotics) increased estrogen/progesterone levels decreased immune system activity. Diabetics and hiv patients are at increased incidents. Results in in ammation and thick odorless discharge; maybe itching or swelling. Associated with tubular infertility or pelvic in ammatory disease. Nonspeci c - may be caused by many different bacteria. Usually treated only if symptomatic or associated with other risk conditions (pregnancy, hysterectomy) Signs of urinary tract infection: urinary frequency, dysuria, discharge, postcoital bleeding. Signs of upper genital tract infection: irregular uterine bleeding, abdominal/pelvic discomfort. Men - urethral pain, think pus like discharge. Women - uti, painful intercourse, vaginal bleeding, fever, move up into fallopian tubes.
