BIOL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Alkalosis, Nephron, Microsoft Powerpoint
Document Summary
Acid-base disorders are defined based on whether the problem is due. Or pco2 and whether ph decreases or increases. Metabolic problems cause changes in hco3 to changes in hco3. Factors that would cause acidemia if uncompensated = acidosis. Ph < 7. 4 with abnormal pco2 or hco3. Factors that would cause alkalemia if uncompensated = alkalosis. Ph > 7. 4 with abnormal pco2 or hco3. Factors that would cause acidemia if uncompensated are referred to as acidosis. In these cases the ph is equal to or less than 7. 4 with abnormal. If the ph is less than 7. 35 then acidemia exists. Factors that would cause alkalemia if uncompensated are referred to as alkalosis. In these cases the ph is equal to or greater than 7. 4 with abnormal pco2 or hco3. If the ph is more than 7. 45 then alkalemia exists. Attempt to maintain normal ph in spite of addition of acids or bases. Full compensation if ph is normal and hco3.
