Neuroplasticity: any change in the nervous system that is not periodic and has a duration of more than a few seconds (subsystems: habituation, learning and memory, and recovery from injury) Habituation: techniques and exercises used in ot and pt intended to decrease neural response to abnormal sensitivity to sensory stimulation. Treatment: stimulating the child"s skin with gentle stimulation then gradually increasing the intensity of the stimulation. Learning and memory: persistent, long-lasting changes in the strength of synaptic connections (number of active regions of the brain decreases) Long term memory: formed by long term potentiation in the hippocampus. Parkinson"s disease: could utilize neuronal transplantation as a means of therapy. Fetal-donor dopamine-producing cells from the substania nigra into the basal nuclei. They will provide a new internal source of dopamine. Somatotopic: the orderly representation of body parts in the central nervous system. Neuropathy/neuronopathy: disease of nerve cells often resulting in pain weakness and sensory loss.
