Historically, one person all power, usually blessed by deity. Divine right of kings, god bless the queen. English civil war, locke and jefferson- power comes from people (social contract theory) Social contract- give up part of your individual rights to join society. States make decisions in part because how their relationships between the individual and the state are defined. What are the motivations behind decisions: political philosophy. Not how we are organizing, but how should be. Philosophers pay for their ideas with persecution and even execution. Invested interest in keeping power: four steps in how a political philosopher presents his arguments. Consider present circumstances ( what do we do about the problem?) A personal methodology- a view of reality (definition of the world that exists) What are people really like? ( human nature). Pledge of allegiance (emphasize that the united states is the best) Most law comes from some kind of moral underpinning.
