Thoughts and actions we use to deal with a threatening situation. A stressful situation may be considered a threat for you. However, it may not be stressful for someone else. First, you have to decide if it is a threat or not. Lazarus and folkman"s transactional model of stress and coping. Transaction (interaction) occurs between a person and the environment. Thus we become stressed when demands (pressure) exceeds our resources (our ability to cope and mediate stress) Thus the interpretation of the stressful event was more important than the event itself. Reappraisal: changes in the situation may change the appraisal. Problem- focused coping: attempts to tackle the problem head on. Emotion- focused coping: dealing with one"s feelings about the stressful event. Use active ways to directly tackle the situation that caused the stress: Decide on a strategy that can help with the situation. Check out various surgeons, expertise, risks, benefits, etc.
