4 principles of stratification: social stratification is a characteristic and product of society, not just a reflection of individual differences , social stratification persists over generations. Parents pass their social status to their children. (the degree of social mobility is a cultural variable: social stratification is universal, but culturally variable, social stratification involves not just inequality but a system of beliefs related to inequality.
