One way dealers and their peers demonstrate coolness is by using and sharing drugs together. The drugs itself are not cool or lame. Nothing about the substance that increased/decreased the user"s status. But when a person used drugs and others knew about it, the user sent a signal about who they were to their peers. Drugs signal: i like to have fun and i can do whatever i want, the law nor my parents tell me what to do. Doing drugs allowed students to exhibit traits that made them likable and desirable to be around. Suburban adolescents quickly developed a habit of illicit drug use to maintain and enhance their coolness. Rapidly learned many methods and motives for getting drugged. Once they became confident about how to operate in the drug world, they became more deeply embedded in it. Knowing more about the drugs make you cooler.
