Document Summary
The problem of evil in philosophy of god is a quite specific. It is not a general question about the concept of evil. Many of those who do not believe in god find the reality of evil and suffering in their own lives and the lives of others plays a major part of their non-belief in a good, all-powerful, all-knowing god. And people of faith also wrestle with the problem of evil and suffering both experientially and intellectually. The problem of evil arises in relation to what are known as the divine. The problem of evil is a problem for traditional theism. Evil is a problem for traditional theism because it challenges belief in the existence of a god who is all-powerful (omnipotent), all-knowing (omniscient), and all-good (omnibenevolent). Evil is a problem because it threatens to render belief in god (with the traditional attributes) illogical.
