PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Ovarian Cancer, Otitis Media
Document Summary
In the last decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of young children who have died because of hiv/aids transmitted to them by their parents. Many of the deaths of young children around the world can be prevented by: reduction in poverty, improvements in nutrition, sanitation, education, and health services. From birth to 1 year of age, infants nearly triple their weight and increase length by 50% Nutritional needs: individual differences among infants in terms of their nutrient reserves, body composition, growth rates, and activity patterns make it difficult to define actual nutritional needs. Nutritionists recommend that infants consume about 50 calories per day for each pound they weigh; more than 2x the caloric requirement of adults. A study of over 3000 randomly selected 4-24 month old infants documented that many parents aren"t feeding their babies enough fruits and vegetables, but are feeding them too much junk food.
