Document Summary

Two types of immunity innate and adaptive. Adaptive tailors its attack to a specific infection. First line: obstacles bacteria have to face to gain entry to the body. Mucous lines any entry of the body. Keeping pathogens out: the first line of defense. Thick gel-like substance secreted by cells in the body. Vagina slightly acidic, inhibits some microorganisms. Vomiting, urination, and defecation remove microorganisms. In terms of anatomy, the digestive tract is exterior of the body. Stomach acid is considered a first line of defense since the digestive tract is exterior. Vagina alters its acidity making it inhospitable for bacteria to survive. Resident bacteria is the good bacteria that hangs out in the body can out compete bad bacteria. Occurs when a potential pathogen enters the body, is not specific for any particular pathogen. Phagocytic cells: white blood cells that surround and engulf invading bacteria. Neutrophils: first responders in infections, digest and destroy bacteria or fungi.
