So today scientist can study magnetic crystals in old rocks and discover the direction of magnetic north/south: sonar-used to map the ocean floor, bathymetry- water depth (topography of ocean/lake floor, ocean observations: Discovered there were deep trenches near the shore and ridges of mountains in the middle of the ocean. The oceanic rock revealed that there was a pattern of the magnetic north reversing polarity many times. Found youngest rock to be near mid-ocean ridges. Ocean sediment was thinnest at md-ocean range and thickest at the oceans edges.
