Document Summary
Intensity coding: receptors can detect and code strength or magnitude of the stimulus: graded impulse: the greater the stimulus the greater the response, spatial summation: the larger number of receptors that are stimulated, the stronger the perceived stimulus. The more sensory receptors stimulated, the more intense the response: temporal summation: a strong stimulus causes receptors to fire at a higher frequency than a weak stimulus. More intense stimuli will result in more action potentials. The higher the peak, the stronger the response: as magnitude of stimuli increases, the frequency of receptor potential also increases. Adaption: decrease in the firing rate of a receptor in response to a continuous or repetitive stimulus: slowly adapting receptor: immediate increase in response, but the firing rate slowly decreases as a function of time. Adapting to stimulus: rapidly adapting: immediate increase in response, but the firing rate rapidly decreases to no response.
