KIN 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Atorvastatin, Disease Burden
KIN 155 Lecture 1
August 22, 2018
Why is physical activity/exercise important?
● Disease burden
○ 5/15 leading causes of death are physical inactivity related
○ 4/15 leading causes of death can be slowed/reduced by physical activity
● Cost
○ Chronic disease= 75% of healthcare spending
○ 7/10 deaths related to chronic disease
○ Projection: chronic disease will cost $47 trillion dollars by 2030
● Treats multiple conditions at the same time
○ Alternative to dozens of prescription meds for individual conditions
○ Physical activity alters pathophysiology which prevents and alleviates
disease
○ The adaptations that occur from being active are medicinal
Chronic disease:
● Disease that develops over a long period of time
● If disease process present and genome is “expressed”, the pathophysiology does
not go away
○ Pathophysiology: characteristic of a disease
■ What is going on to show outcome of disease
● Goal is to reverse the pathophysiology
○ Most drugs don’t do this (they only eliminate symptoms)
○ Contrast: physical activity: want to reverse the cause of disease
● Example (fatty liver disease)
○ Conditions: no exercise, high fat diet===high cholesterol
■ Doctor gives lipitor drug
● Drug acts on enzymes for cholesterol synthesis
Document Summary
5/15 leading causes of death are physical inactivity related. 4/15 leading causes of death can be slowed/reduced by physical activity. Projection: chronic disease will cost trillion dollars by 2030. Treats multiple conditions at the same time. Alternative to dozens of prescription meds for individual conditions. Physical activity alters pathophysiology which prevents and alleviates disease. The adaptations that occur from being active are medicinal. Disease that develops over a long period of time. If disease process present and genome is expressed , the pathophysiology does not go away. What is going on to show outcome of disease. Most drugs don"t do this (they only eliminate symptoms) Contrast: physical activity: want to reverse the cause of disease. Conditions: no exercise, high fat diet===high cholesterol. Drug acts on enzymes for cholesterol synthesis. Vs: if patient lowers fat intake, increases exercise, then real cholesterol production is reduced. Physically alter the cause of hypertension due to benefits of physical activity.
