PSIO 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Vitamin K Deficiency, Colony-Stimulating Factor, Pulmonary Circulation
Document Summary
Three components of the cardiovascular system: the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart: which acts as a pump to propel. Blood vessels: which conduct blood throughout the body. Systemic circuit carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells of our body. Systemic circuit carries oxygenated blood to body cells/tissues/organs. Pulmonary circuit carries de-oxygenated blood to the lungs where it is reloaded with oxygen (and emptied of excess carbon dioxide) before returning to the heart. The aortic semilunar valve separates the left ventricle chamber from the aorta. The pulmonary semilunar valve separates the right ventricular chamber from the main pulmonary trunk. Cardiac centers of the medulla: fibers leaving from the cardio- acceleratory center are sympathetic. Cardiac centers of the medulla: fibers leaving from the cardio- inhibitory center are parasympathetic. Cardio-acceleratory center: a collection of sympathetic neurons that increase hr and contractility. Cardio- inhibitory center: collection of parasympthatic neurons that decrease heart rate.
