Lesson 5 - founding caroline and creating a plantation society. Barbados 1600"s: growing sugar economy, not enough land to have large sugar plantations for people to grow on and want leave. Barbados to seek fortune and go to south caroline in 1670. 1st generation of african 1670-1710: charter generation, flexibility, isand but lots of access of freedom and leave slavery - what de ne slavery for berlin. 1710: shift in south caroline with slavery. Plantation generation: de ned as slavery as rigid and restricted, cant easily get out of slavey, how they"re able to work and how society sees slavery. Development of crash culture: rice becomes a key mechanism. Berlin has lots of power: forms family, community, grow crops, have freedom, can manifest itself outside the political etc, slavery is trying to get control of the family. Blacks were kept separate from the european-american world. Rice reshaped the destiny of black people and tobacco reformed the lives of chesapeake slaves.
