Absolute monarchy was the best form of government. Man was good or was possessed of natural goodness. Social man believed to be a depraved animal, more likely to be vain, proud, envious of. The ancient world was one of multi-polar anarchy. Every state, by law of nature, is engaged at all times in an undeclared war against every other state. Humans lost their natural strength, became very dependent on others. Other human beings have been the most dangerous hostile force of nature in the human environment for a very long time. Our adaptive response to this threat has been brain growth, not physical size and strength. Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that. Lethal violence is deeply rooted in the primate lineage.
