Language and communication (what is communication & language?) Talk about images that aren"t there as well as objects. Without words, it is a lot harder to comprehend (it"s complicated) Language depends on human biology; anatomy, neurological structure; cognition. Humans have a generalized intelligence (starting with a blank state) Humans have a specialized intelligence (how are language and culture related?) Do all cultures organize information the way. Language shapes culture and how people perceive the world. Semantic domain: how meaning is assigned to categories based on the context of a particular time or place. Western science: the linnaean system of classification . Karam of kaironk valley in highlands of new guinea recognize 180 flying birds and bats by name (bulmer 1967) Hunting restriction: only ~2 per year, small hunting groups, cook and eat in forest. Never bring a cassowary near the taro crop!! Semantic universals exist in the domain of color vocabulary.
