BMB 207 Lecture 9: Chapter 9
Document Summary
All synthetics are the direct result of organic chemistry. When a carbon has four single bonds the arrangement forms a tetrahedron. Full structural formula - all bonds and atoms in the molecule. Collapsed structural formula - all atoms in compact form. Wedge-dash - actual positions of atoms and bonds in molecule. Dashed wedge represents a bond that is going away from you. Solid wedge represents a bond coming toward you. Molecular formula - used for writing balanced equations. Acyclic compounds contain chains of carbon with no rings. Heterocyclic have rings with a least one non-carbon atom. Hydrocarbons are classified by types of carbon-carbon bonds. Homologous series - basics of classification and nomenclature. Compounds in which the members are built up in a regular repetitive way. Alkanes in which the atoms do not form a continuous chain are branched. Isomers - same molecular formula but different structures. Constitutional - atoms connected to one another in different order.
