PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Seasonal Affective Disorder, Circadian Clock, Circadian Rhythm
Document Summary
Defined as our awareness of ourselves and our environments. Your brain continues to process external information when you"re asleep. Your brain continues to process internally generated information. In general, you can be easily awakened from sleep. Sleep protects us from the dark (evolutionary perspective: also protects us from predators) Sleep restores body tissues and the brain to reorganize/repair itself and consolidates memories. Sleep allows us to grow (the pituitary gland releases growth hormone) Without alarms or clocks, humans will sleep at least 9 hours. Body keeps track of sleep debt for at least two weeks. People who sleep 7-8 hours a night tend to outlive those who are sleep-deprived. No: sleep-wake cycle includes a major period of sleep at night and a smaller period in the afternoon. People isolated from clocks in an underground room slept in 2 periods. Naps: focus attention and help us make complicated decisions. Biological clock regulates body rhythms every 24 hours.
