HSTAA 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pequot War, Coverture, Psalms
Document Summary
Recall: puritans saw selves as god"s chosen, heirs to the israelites. Authorities look for any trace of sin, otherwise god withdraws his protection & satan has free reign. Church & members have key roles in maintaining godly society. Duty to watch over & care for each other, & non-believers as well. So people needed to prepare their souls at all times, even as children. Became a very litigious society brought to court for various actions (non-christian offenses) To the puritans, our modern notions of law & privacy would be foreign. Individuals obligated to watch others (even persons close to them) to prevent sin. Pre-modern world: vulnerable to natural world (beyond control, understanding?) New england was fairly healthy, but susceptible to outbreaks. The natural world seen as an extension of god"s actions. 100+ household required a school & expert (often from outside) So puritans needed to be literate (nothing about practical job training)
