Document Summary
***the only sense that will be on the test (midterm 10/17) is vision. Our sense organs respond to and translate environmental stimuli into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. Perception: (cid:373)aki(cid:374)g (cid:862)se(cid:374)se(cid:863) of what our se(cid:374)ses tell us the active process of organizing the stimulus output and giving it meaning. Sensory systems are designed to extract the information we need to function and survive. Transduction: converting the characteristics of a stimulus into nerve impulses. Psychophysics: studies relations between the physical characteristics of stimuli and sensory capabilities. Absolute threshold: the lowest intensity at which a stimulus can be detected 50% of the time. Decision criterion: how certain a person must be that a stimulus is present before they will say they detect it. Decision criterion can change due to fatigue, or expectation of the stimuli to be there. Signal detection theory: concerned with the factors that influence sensory judgments. Characteristics of both participants and situations influence decision criterion.
