Document Summary
Provisioning services: what we harvest from the environment around us. Regulating services: how ecosystem regulated itself or how we use it to regulate the environment. Ability to feed population is greater than in the past. Ability to get more out of the land. Population is growing, land available for farming is not growing, we cannot stretch the planet. People have more meat in their diet than before, more resources are used: Grow grain- feed to animals - deliver to human for consumption. "land subsidence" -decreasing of the surface of the earth that is caused by farmers pumping water from underground/aquifer. Seen as a problem in central california valley. With decreasing biodiversity we observe loss of genetic resources. Abiotic processes: abiotic factors in an environment include such items as sunlight, temperature, wind patterns, and precipitation. Climate regulation (ex: trees - co2 greenhouse gas - temperature control)
