Document Summary

Introductions, antibiotic resistance, evolution by natural selection, copying with antibiotic resistance. Poisons other microbes - compounds such as antibiotics evolved to do this. Golden age of freedom from bacterial infection- but we may be reaching the end of this. Keflex- commonly used antibiotic for skin infections, used often as a precautionary measure. Pseudomonas aeruginosa - bacteria, hospital infection, 9% change of getting a bacterial infection after leaving the hospital. Samples are checked for resistance with the use of multiple antibiotics (dish in bacteria, look for growth with the use of specific antibiotic). If resistant to all antibiotics available a decision is make to cut the infected tissue. Heavy use of antibiotics promotes the evolution of resistance. Keflex possibly destroyed the healthy bacteria that could have assisted by competing with pseudomonas, not having enough good bacteria leaves more space for pseudomonas to grow/reproduce.
