The villagers believe that there are spirits called hantu that possess people. The girls who get possessed in the factory run out; all the other girls run out as well. The factory owner has to hire shaman to scare of the hantu. Ong treats spirit possession as a social/cultural pracice and wants to analyze it as such. She has to look at efects of unmarried young women looking for wages on pre-exising paterns of male authority. She has to look at organizaion of factories.
