Socialization to language ( guring out grammar, vocab, etc. ) Socialization through language ( guring out how to become a moral person by learning how to use language appropriately) Literacy - a cultural activity - looks and functions differently in different societies. Ways of taking - ways of extracting meaning from world around you. Orality is not opposed to reading and writing - all part of same process. Literacy events - reading as a speci c activity. All kids are not socialized to interact with the world in this way. Babies are ctionalized; but older kids are not. Preschoolers given books (but reading not always common activity) By 3. 5 years, kids are told to sit and listen. As kids gets older, adults treats ctionalization as lies. Kids learn to talk and perform from a very early age. Kids encouraged and expected to perform stories spontaneously. Maintown - experience at home matches institutional expectations so they are most successful.
