Document Summary

To show that the problem is modern civilization, not empire. To adopt modern civilization is a suicidal policy (p7). The partition of bengal in 1905 gandhi calls the real awakening . Divided bengal by religion, the hindu (west) and muslim (east) parts. Hindus could only vote for hindu leaders and muslims for muslim leaders. Gandhi believes this is an agenda set up by the british for them to be fighting against one another. Swadeshi movement: swa is self, deshi is home/country. This was concerned with uniting everyone to protest, finding what unites those of different religion and caste. They all found their clothing that was made in england and brought it together and burned it as a protest. This movement was in response to the partition and to the economic drain of india. Swadeshi offers the possibility of every individual being able to make their own clothing.
