Lecture: continuation of epigenic view: fetal period, lasts about 7 months it is the prenatal period that extends from. 2 months after conception until birth in typical pregnancies. 3 months after conception fetus is about 3 inches long & weighs about 3 ounces. It is active, moving its arms & legs etc. Genitals can be identified as male/female: the brain last 2 months of pregnancy fatty tissues develop & toenails for example. By the end of 5th month fetus is about 12 inches long & 6 months of pregnancy infant shows grasping reflex & irregular breathing movements. Fetus has a chance of weighs close to a pound. 24 days after conception: basic construction of the brain is assembled during the first 2 trimesters of prenatal development. Anencephaly: the head end of the neural tube fails to close: highest regions of the brain fail to develop & death occurs in the womb, during childbirth, or shortly after birth.
