Document Summary

Subcultures: have their own language and stuff. Not really mainstream, but they create their own qualities that create their subculture. Ex) goths - they have different music, slang, and values that they like compared to others. There can be many at a time. Countercultures exist in opposition to broader culture. Subcultures can be used to talk to others -- signal others that you guys have something in common. Even though there are many subcultures, people relate to each other easily -- symbolic interaction. Ex) hippies are a subculture and a counterculture since they have their own language and identity, but they"re not like other cultures as well in terms of how they speak and dress. High culture (upper class); low culture (working/lower class) High culture usually has a sense of sophistication while the lower culture is more basic and everyday. Cultural knowledge serves as currency to how much you know about different cultures. Lower social class = small cultural capital.
