SOCIOL 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Collective Behavior
Document Summary
Perhaps the most fruitful distinction with which the sociological imagination works is between "the personal troubles of milieu" and "the public issues of social structure. " This distinction is an essential tool of the sociological imagination and a feature of all class work in social science. The people, groups, institutions that you interact with on a day to day basis, that you are aware with. A trouble is a private matter, personally felt, individual concern. Public matters transcend local environments that we are personally aware of, what we feel in our ordinary life -- they have to do with the organization of such milieux into institutions like family, school, family, media, etc. A collective matter that affect many people, that many people care about. Offer thinking tools to think about social problems, what social problems are, how they are chosen to be social problems. Students of social problems have made an error in locating social problems in objective conditions.
