In text, the rhetor or narrator is irst person. Efects of 1st person narrative is that it is limited only to what that person knows. Characters are solving the crime alongside the narrator. 1st person speaks to us (uses 2nd person) We feel attached to the narrator because we feel spoken to. Semantics: the conventions (characters, locations, props, music style) Syntax: the relationships between the conventions and narrative structures. Pragmatics: how institutions (studies, critics and audiences engage with genre. Lack of 3-point lighting (which ensures that the audience can see all the detail in the scene produces the shadows that give ilm noir its name) Ensures all spatial planes in focus (deep focus); particularly during camera movement --but can also lead to distortion (like a fun house mirror) that can be used artistically) Historical context (circle) audience: who is the text appealing to. Rhetor: the person who create/ has a hand in creating a tex; author, agency, writer, director.
