(rhythm, melody, harmonic content, place of origin) Genre: creates value and are categories of value (economic, ethical, aesthetic) Genre categories are unstable (they have an origin, but they also grow) The period of industrial to neoliberal capitalism (not only an economic but also a cultural transformation ~ emergence of corporations preferably associated with music/ entertainment) Specialized musicians to individuals often wealthy to much more abstract uniform commodities. Neoliberal capitalism: increased individualism through the process of consuming art, entertainment, fashion, etc. ( go out and shop, show them that you"re free ) Popular music: music that is mass produced and consumed by large num- bers of people via mass media technologies and the mechanisms of multi- national capitalism. Generally the product of diverse and cosmopolitan ur- ban centers.
