LIFESCI 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Hair Cell, Mechanoreceptor, Resting Potential
Document Summary
Week 8 lecture 16- neurons, brains, & our connection to the external world. Body has 2 systems for responding to stimuli and coordinating with the body- hormones (endocrine system) and neurons (nervous system), each with its strengths and weaknesses. Central nervous system (cns)- brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns)- motor and sensory nerves projecting from the spinal cord and base of the brain sensory receptors (eyes, ears, nose, fingertips) detect signals and the sensory input (pns) is integrated (brain and spinal cord- cns). The motor output is sent out through nerves (pns) to effectors (muscles, glands) to perform the action. Gaby- sensory neurons don"t develop, cannot feel pain. Plants cannot feel pain because they do not have a nervous system, so they cannot react to any pain they feel. Axon- long strand sometimes covered in myelin sheaths that carry signal, can be very long.
