LIFESCI 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lipid Bilayer, Osmosis, Paracellular Transport
Document Summary
Cytoskeleton: network of fibers that aid in structure and activities in the cell, cell movement, types. Microtubules: act as railroads for motor proteins, aid in cell division, structural support, act as cilia and flagella to aid in movement. Central vacuole stores water, enzymes and molecules used in reproduction and digestion. Cell walls for extra support around the cell membrane. Plasmodesmata are openings within the cell wall to aid n transportation of molecules. Prokaryotic cells: do not have membrane bound organelles, only ribosomes and nucleoid, a region for genetic material, may have a cell wall and a capsule, outermost layer made of polysaccharides, some bacteria can carry out photosynthesis. Integral proteins are found inserted in the membrane. Peripheral proteins are only found on one side of the membrane: all cells are different shapes, portion of organelles vary, proteins found in the membrane and in the cell, vary.
