United by values, principles, beliefs not by ethnicity, race, religion, class, language, gender, national origin. Appreciate the role of institutions, governement, and coordination in fostering stability (and change!) Understand the central tension of our time. In 2016 72% of americans believe refusing to stand for the anthem is unpatriotic. In 2017 48% innappropriate to kneel in protest during anthem. Only 30% think players who kneel should be fired. How are these shared values exercised in reality. Fighting for different conceptions of justice and morality. Throughout all of it, institutions of government are stable. But implementation of ideas can change, does change. Weakened communities or a society and culture true to our shared values. Everyone gets one free unexcused absence from section. Each additional unexcused absence lowers your final course grade by a full letter grade. Late paper penalty: one letter grade on the paper for each day the paper is late.
