PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nmda Receptor, Dog Meat, Fear Conditioning
Document Summary
Ivan pavlov- nutritionist that studied digestion, studied dog saliva to determine how calories were absorbed by body. Rang a bell and gave a dog meat powder, measured the salivation from the dog. Found that eventually the bell caused a salivary response because the dog associated the bell and the meat powder. Unconditioned response- a response that naturally occurs after a stimulus. Conditioned stimulus- response trained into subject after several trials. Used in attempts to quit smoking, relief for insomniacs, cancer and chemo, etc. Some things are harder to condition than others, depends on how far the stretch is. Long-term potentiation- occurrence where 2 neurons fire at the same time that allow for. Neuroscience of classical conditioning two things to be associated for learning. Nmda receptor- transfer protein with magnesium in the middle that sometimes blocks flow. Allows calcium ions into cell, potassium ions outside cell.
