Seen as clinical/experimental field that aims to study, assess, understand, & trest behaviors related to brain functioning. Goal: understand the mind & brain by studying people who have suffered brain injury or neurological illness. Visual agnosia: impairment of recognition of visually presented objects. Not due to deficit in vision, language, memory, or low intellect. Two types: apperceptive agnosia: results in profound difficulties on patient"s ability to recognize visually presented info. Intact ability to attend to cued stimuli & to maintain fixation, reach for moving targets. Some can trace shapes/letters but cant tell what the object is. Picture naming is impaired, recognition of objects can be achieved through other modalities (ex. Patients do not have brain damage in the same area (mainly in left occipital lobe: associative agnosia: results in an impairment in recognition or assigning meaning to a stimulus that is accurately perceived.
